About Morena
The town was named after the small village of Muraina, located about 8 km. away from the present town. The nearby railway station of Shikarpur and the sarai was also later renamed after the old village. Initially it was called Pench-Morena as it had a number of cotton processing machines. The district is located on the north-western border of the state in Chambal valley. The present Morena is combined with the Sikarwari and Tanwargarh districts of 19th century. Due to major settlement of SikarwarRajputs in Ambah area, this was known as Sikarwari. Similary due to the settlement of Tanwars(Tomars) in Joura area, the central part of the district was called Tanwargarh. It is due to this virtue that the dense forest of yesterday has become a famous “Dham” today. It is said that Karah is a living symbol of the penance of three Siddhas.
Mahatma Chetandas of Dhanela had a disciple named Ramdas, whom they called Ramua. He used to do secret meditation along with his daily chores. Once he picked up fire with his hands. With the permission of Mahatma Chetandas, he came to the Karah bush and started doing penance. It is believed that a Siddha Baba used to live here earlier, who used to take tough tests of the saints and sages who came for penance. This Siddha Baba also tested Ramua and after passing this test, Ramua came to be known as Siddha Ramdas. He planted a banyan tree here, which keeps his memory fresh even today. He also established the temple of Ram-Janaki ji, whose idol was later taken away by his disciple Jankidas Dhanela, which is still installed there and worshipped daily.
